What is a Health Information Network?

Health Information Networks (HIN), like ours in North Dakota, were created to advance healthcare through the use of health information technology. They enable doctors to query medical records from other authorized doctors, as well as find information on a patient, needed for up-to-the-minute, quality care.

The health information network replaces paper communication with more efficient electronic means, helping reduce test duplication and potential for errors. The network, through our Clinical Portal, creates instant access to life-saving information during the most critical moments.

Information that may be obtained includes, but is not limited to:

  • medications
  • allergies
  • lab results
  • advance directives and more

The NDHIN is about getting the right information to the right place at the right time about the right person.
